Yesterday I received a phone call on my cellphone. “Hello, Ijah? This is Warren Chan”. My mind was racing madly. Warren who? Could this be someone that I had dated, dumped and subsequently forgotten.
Turned out he’s from KLUe magazine and is in charge for lining up the acts for the Starbucks-KLUe Songwriter Series 2005. I did a quick flashback. About 2-3 years ago I used to do a lot of open mics, most notably at the Songwriter’s Round series at No Black Tie with (the now famous) Pete Teo. After a while, work and life got in the way and I sort of froze all my, uh, extra-curricular activities while getting my house in order. Late last year I saw that KLUe was looking for unknown songwriters to participate in the series and I thought, what the heck. And so I sent a demo CD (containing Phase 3, Wish List, Yang Sebenarnya and Puisi Akhir Musim Bunga) and a rambling biography and then promptly forgot about it.
Until Warren called yesterday.
Anyway, because of work commitments I am only able to do one show as a supporting act. I immediately thought of 3 potential problems. (1) My guitar is broken and the accoustic thingamajic inside the guitar is not working. (2) I have laryngitis. (3) I have not memorised any complete chords or lyrics for any of the songs! Eeeek.
Yes, this story is so strange it has got to be true. Problems aside, I will be performing at Starbucks Bangsar (Jln Telawi) on Feb 18 @ 10.30pm. It will be a half-hour accoustic performance, and I will be singing between 4-5 original compositions. bImagine that! If you could come, please do.
Although I may suck like a 10-week old egg and may never recover from the shame, I proceded to call/email everyone that I know and begged them to come. I also asked them to ply themselves with enough beer/wine/marijuana beforehand so that they will be all mellow and nice. Don’t want anyone to start throwing a hot cuppa latte at me, no no.
That being said, I am looking forward to it and have started to think about what I want to play. Look at this space for more updates!
